Uterine Fibroid Embolization
An online resource to help you better understand uterine fibroids and available treatment options.
Uterine fibroids are benign, non-cancerous growths on the walls of the uterus. They can range from less than one inch around to more than six inches. African-American women and those with a family history are more likely to develop uterine fibroids.
Some women experience uterine fibroid symptoms that can severely compromise their quality of life. Heavy, prolonged monthly periods, pain, frequent urination, constipation and an enlarged belly can make normal day-to-day activities difficult and sometimes impossible.
St. Thomas Radiology Associates performs a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), a non-surgical option that shrinks the fibroids and preserves the uterus. In many women, this procedure can be an alternative to hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). UFE greatly reduces recovery times compared to surgical procedures. Patients return home the day of the procedure.
