If you have varicose veins, you’ve probably thought about getting rid of them many times, only to be stopped by the thought of painful surgery and lengthy recovery. Right now there’s a new treatment called the endovenous laser ablation with ambulatory phlebectomy, which eliminates varicose veins in about an hour. This is performed at St. Thomas Radiology with virtually no pain and no recovery.
With EVLT procedure, a laser fiber is inserted into the vein through a tiny puncture site. The laser energizes the fiber as it is withdrawn from the vein. Energy emitted from the tip of the fiber causes only the treated vein to close, while the body automatically routes the blood to other healthy veins. The unsightly varicose veins are then removed by ambulatory phlebectomy.
